    Primary skeletal muscle cells cultured on gelatin bead microcarriers develop structural and biochemical features characteristic of adult skeletal muscle

    A primary skeletal muscle cell culture, in which myoblasts derived from newborn rabbit hindlimb muscles grow on gelatin bead microcarriers in suspension and differentiate into myotubes, has been established previously. In the course of differentiation and beginning spontaneous contractions, these multinucleated myotubes do not detach from their support. Here, we describe the development of the primary myotubes with respect to their ultrastructural differentiation. Scanning electron microscopy reveals that myotubes not only grow around the surface of one carrier bead but also attach themselves to neighbouring carriers, forming bridges between carriers. Transmission electron microscopy demonstrates highly ordered myofibrils, T-tubules and sarcoplasmic reticulum. The functionality of the contractile apparatus is evidenced by contractile activity that occurs spontaneously or can be elicited by electrostimulation. Creatine kinase activity increases steadily until day 20 of culture. Regarding the expression of isoforms of myosin heavy chains (MHC), we could demonstrate that from day 16 on, no non-adult MHC isoform mRNAs are present. Instead, on day 28 the myotubes express predominantly adult fast MHCIId/x mRNA and protein. This MHC pattern resembles that of fast muscles of adult rabbits. In contrast, primary myotubes grown on matrigel-covered culture dishes express substantial amounts of non-adult MHC protein even on day 21. To conclude, primary myotubes grown on microcarriers in their later stages exhibit many features of adult skeletal muscle and characteristics of fast type II fibers.     Measurement of the resonance at ER=1422 keV in Ar36(p,γ)37K

    A new resonance at ER=1422 keV has been found in the reaction Ar36(p,γ)37K. From its measured resonance strength of ωγ=(6.0±1.5)×10-4 eV the proton partial width Γp can be calculated. Our data suggest a value of Γγ/Γp40 for the ratio of γ to proton partial width for the corresponding state at Ex=3241 keV in K37. We find that the corrected distribution of Gamow-Teller strength below the isobaric analog state as obtained from the β-delayed proton decay of Ca37 is in agreement with the results inferred from the Cl37(p,n)37Ar reaction

    Emergent global oscillations in heterogeneous excitable media: The example of pancreatic beta cells

    Using the standard van der Pol-FitzHugh-Nagumo excitable medium model I demonstrate a novel generic mechanism, diversity, that provokes the emergence of global oscillations from individually quiescent elements in heterogeneous excitable media. This mechanism may be operating in the mammalian pancreas, where excitable beta cells, quiescent when isolated, are found to oscillate when coupled despite the absence of a pacemaker region.Comment: See home page http://lec.ugr.es/~julya

    Low-Energy Brane-World Effective Actions and Partial Supersymmetry Breaking

    As part of a programme for the general study of the low-energy implications of supersymmetry breaking in brane-world scenarios, we study the nonlinear realization of supersymmetry which occurs when breaking N=2 to N=1 supergravity. We consider three explicit realizations of this supersymmetry breaking pattern, which correspond to breaking by one brane, by one antibrane or by two (or more) parallel branes. We derive the minimal field content, the effective action and supersymmetry transformation rules for the resulting N=1 theory perturbatively in powers of kappa = 1/M_{Planck}. We show that the way the massive gravitino and spin-1 fields assemble into N=1 multiplets implies the existence of direct brane-brane contact interactions at order O(kappa). This result is contrary to the O(kappa^2) predicted by the sequestering scenario but in agreement with recent work of Anisimov et al. Our low-energy approach is model independent and is a first step towards determining the low-energy implications of more realistic brane models which completely break all supersymmetries.Comment: Latex, 29 Page

    First observation of the decay Bˉs0D0K0\bar{B}^0_s \to D^0 K^{*0} and a measurement of the ratio of branching fractions B(Bˉs0D0K0)B(Bˉ0D0ρ0)\frac{{\cal B}(\bar{B}^0_s \to D^0 K^{*0})}{{\cal B}(\bar{B}^0 \to D^0 \rho^0)}

    The first observation of the decay Bˉs0D0K0\bar{B}^0_s \to D^0 K^{*0} using pppp data collected by the LHCb detector at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 36 pb1^{-1}, is reported. A signal of 34.4±6.834.4 \pm 6.8 events is obtained and the absence of signal is rejected with a statistical significance of more than nine standard deviations. The Bˉs0D0K0\bar{B}^0_s \to D^0 K^{*0} branching fraction is measured relative to that of Bˉ0D0ρ0\bar{B}^0 \to D^0 \rho^0: B(Bˉs0D0K0)B(Bˉ0D0ρ0)=1.48±0.34±0.15±0.12\frac{{\cal B}(\bar{B}^0_s \to D^0 K^{*0})}{{\cal B}(\bar{B}^0 \to D^0 \rho^0)} = 1.48 \pm 0.34 \pm 0.15 \pm 0.12, where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second systematic and the third is due to the uncertainty on the ratio of the B0B^0 and Bs0B^0_s hadronisation fractions.Comment: 10 pages, 3 figures, submitted to Phys.
